Prime Family Pharmacy recently made the news!

WBTV Charlotte invited our very own pharmacist Nehal Kabrawala to share expert insights on the newly approved 2025-26 COVID-19 vaccine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) has officially approved updated COVID-19 vaccines and ended their emergency use authorization, changing who is eligible to receive them. The newly approved vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax are now available for seniors as well as adults and children with certain underlying health conditions.

In the WBTV news segment, our pharmacist shared what the FDA’s decision means for our community and how people can stay protected heading into the fall and winter months.

Prime Family Pharmacy has vaccines in stock and is already working with patients to ensure safe administration while waiting for updated federal recommendations.

As we know, viruses continue to evolve with new strains and mutations, and it is difficult to predict what COVID-19 strain will be most common this season. Nevertheless, healthcare providers recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting seasonal vaccinations and focusing on prevention:

Promote Good Hygiene:

• Wash hands often: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (the length of two "Happy Birthday" songs) before eating, after using the bathroom, and after coughing or sneezing.

• Use hand sanitizer: When soap and water aren't available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Practice respiratory etiquette: Cough and sneeze into elbows or a tissue (then throw them in the trash!)

• Avoid touching the face: Keep hands away from eyes, nose, and mouth.

Prevent Exposure:

• Get vaccinated: This is the best way to protect against viruses!

• Stay home when sick: Stay home from work/school if flu-like symptoms (fever, severe cough, etc.) are present, to prevent spreading germs.

• Avoid sharing personal items: Do not share food/drinks, utensils, toys, office supplies with others, especially when sick.

Support General Health:

• Clean frequently touched surfaces: Regularly clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, phones, keyboards and toys to remove germs.

• Ensure good air quality: Increase ventilation by opening windows or using fans to improve air flow.

• Support a healthy lifestyle: Maintain a healthy diet and ensure adequate rest, which can help strengthen immune systems.

Summary

Just like the flu shot, new vaccines are recommended each year to help reduce the risk of serious illness - especially for older adults, those with underlying health conditions, and anyone who wants to avoid getting sick. Our pharmacists recommend working with a primary care provider to determine the best course of action based on your individual needs.
