6 Myths About Medications

As pharmacists, we hear a lot of myths and misconceptions about medications — some harmless, others potentially dangerous. Whether it's advice from a well-meaning friend or something you read online, not all medication information is created equal.

Here are six common medication myths we hear at Prime Family Pharmacy — and the facts you need to stay safe and informed.

Myth #1: “If it’s over-the-counter, it’s completely safe.”

Fact:
Over-the-counter (OTC) medications can be very effective — but they’re still drugs. Taking too much, combining them with other medications, or using them incorrectly can cause serious side effects. For example, acetaminophen, found in many cold medicines, can damage the liver in high doses. Always read the label and ask your pharmacist if you’re unsure about a combination.

Myth #2: “You should stop taking antibiotics once you feel better.”

Fact:
This is a common and risky mistake. Stopping antibiotics early can lead to antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat. Even if you feel better, it’s important to complete the full course unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Myth #3: “Natural supplements are safer than prescription medications.”

Fact:
Just because something is “natural” doesn’t mean it’s safe. Herbal supplements can interact with prescription medications, cause side effects, or be harmful in large amounts. For example, St. John’s Wort can interfere with antidepressants, birth control, and more. Always let your pharmacist or doctor know about all supplements you’re taking.

Myth #4: “It’s okay to share prescriptions with family if you have the same symptoms.”

Fact:
Never share prescription medications. What works for one person might not be safe for another — even with similar symptoms. Dosages, medical history, allergies, and drug interactions all matter. Medications are prescribed for you, not for general use.

Myth #5: “You can crush or split any pill to make it easier to take.”

Fact:
Some pills are time-released, enteric-coated, or formulated to dissolve slowly. Crushing or splitting them can make them ineffective — or even dangerous.Always check with your pharmacist before modifying how you take your medication. If swallowing pills is hard, ask your pharmacist about liquid forms or chewables.

Myth #6: “If one dose is good, two must be better.”

Fact:
Taking more than the prescribed dose can lead to serious side effects or even overdose. More is not better. Always follow the exact dosing instructions provided by your doctor or on the package. If you miss a dose, don’t double up unless directed by your healthcare provider.
